Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God ~ Hebrews 6:1
It is important to note that as we talk about going forward, it is not only to go forward in our physical lives. We also have to go forward in our spiritual lives. In the days of the early church, going forward spiritually was a major concern and that should be the concern of today’s church.
Apostle Paul was speaking to some people in Hbrews 5:12 and he said, ‘For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.’
The Apostle wasn’t happy that some people who should have grown spiritually were still always running to the pastors for everything. They were supposed to have become teachers but someone still needs to teach them. This is an indication that they weren’t going forward spiritually. For a long time, they remained on the same spot.
In Hebrews 6:1, the Apostle then urges us to leave the principles of the doctrines of Christ and go on to perfection. This means we can go forward in spiritual maturity.
Why is it important to go forward in spiritual maturity? The first and the most important thing is that God is not a stagnant God and cannot give birth to stagnant children. So it is disheartening for God when he sees us on the same spot always. Just like every parent, you will never be happy when your children don’t grow physically and mentally.
God is also not happy when we don’t go forward spiritually. So as a child of God, don’t stay with the spiritual food that you took when you first came into the kingdom of God. That cannot sustain you. Those elementary teachings were referred to as milk. We were also told that milk is for babes. So we have to grow in order to be able to take the meat – deeper things – of the word of God.
How do we begin to go forward in Christ? We must daily seek him. Our urge for God must increase. David kept speaking about how his soul yearns for God. He describes his thirst for God by giving us a picture of how the dear pants for water. Jesus was teaching in Mathew 5:6 and he said, ‘Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.’ We must always yearn for more of God.
As we yearn more for God, he sees our needs and takes care of them. In fact, when you see someone who truly moves forward spiritually, the person must move forward in every other area of his life. Jesus said, ‘But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.’ (Mathew 6:33)
Finally, Solomon showed the desire to go forward spiritually instead of asking for riches when God gave him a blank cheque. He asked for wisdom and God added riches to define wisdom for him. Go forward in Christ and the Lord Jesus Christ will also move you forward in life.
