Where you are to where you would rather be | © Fola Daniel Adelesi

Goals, plans, resolutions, visions and strategy help us to move from where we are to where we would rather be and that is why we have to always set them at the beginning of the year. One of the reasons you can’t tell too soon that you are behind your contemporaries is when there are no goals set for your life.

Some people will even come to tell you that you don’t have to look at the time frame of others to decide what should be happening in your life. I will tell you that’s a big fat lie. If you have a baby that cannot start sitting up from the age of three months you may not be too worried when it is six months and the baby cannot sit, you start getting worried. That’s because the baby should be getting ready to walk at that phase by making attempts to stand.

There are so many others that will get so worried if the baby turns one and still cannot walk. In fact, the baby might be ‘in trouble’ if the baby is from around here. People will not let the baby rest. You will find this person and that person suggesting one thing or the other to use just to make sure the baby walks early enough. Those who are little reserved will want to do things the right way but they will never let the doctors rest. they will visit the hospital nearly all the time and any medical professional who is their relative will know no rest until that baby starts walking.

Why does that happen or why do people become that worried? It is because life has set some natural goals for us. They have watched every human being over time. Because of that they expect you to have started doing some things at a phase. If they did not watch others and see what they were doing and at what time it was done, they will not be worried when those babies don’t do things at the right time.

Now the connection between the baby issue and your life is that there are goals you must set so you know what this is where you were and this is where you used to be. The milestones a baby is expected to hit is what we refer to as maturity. If the baby does not hit the milestones we say the baby is not growing. So if you are also not hitting any milestone then you are not growing. It means you are not progressing in life.

One of the ways to be sure you are actually hitting the milestones and making progress is to have set goals. One other thing that I think is missing in the goals of many people is that it does not reflect where they are today. At the end of the year or at the end of a new phase of your life, you will be celebrating your goals that have been achieved not just because you hit the new set goals. You have to compare the new set goals with the old goals and see if you achieved more or you just remained on the same level and repeated the same thing.

So the question is where are you today? Where are you in your finances, marriage, academics, spiritual life, business, career or other personal things? Once you have set that then you can say this is not where I really want to be. I should have moved far beyond this point. Or it may be that you have been making steady progress and you want to go further.

I know where I am today and I have been working on where I want to be. That’s why my conversations and activities are built around where I want to be. If you don’t take these things seriously you will later notice that you either haven’t done much or you have been playing out the scripts of other people for your life. It is even worse when you have actually been chasing other people’s dreams and running to be like them.

You have a chance to become a better you and it is very important for you to do that. Start from today and evaluate your progress. Look at where you are now and decide where you want to be. Put it on paper. Set the activities that will take you from this present point to the next point. Roll your sleeves and get to work!
