‘Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.’ (KJV) 1 Peter 3: 7
I wanted us to look at something that will tally with women since it’s mothers’ day. I also think that men are so gentle and that’s why we allow several days dedicated to women and only one dedicated to us. About two weeks ago it was international women’s day. Today is mothers’ day and there’s still another mothers’ day coming. Anyway, we truly love our sisters, wives and mothers. May God continually bless and preserve them for us.
Take a look at the verse of scripture quoted above again. It is one of the most popular scriptures but most people only quote a portion and also misinterpret that portion. What you always hear is ‘women are the weaker vessels.’ Let’s clear the air on this. The Bible did not in anyway say that women are the weaker vessel.
When you read the preceding line it says we (men and husbands) dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel. It was a comparison meant to show how some set of people are to be treated. It does not mean that is what they are. A weaker vessel cannot be the one carrying a child in her stomach for nine months with all the pains of pregnancy and still go through the pains of labour!
The first things the line even asks us to do is to dwell with them according to knowledge. That presupposes that a man without wisdom or knowledge is not fit to have a wife! Knowledge is required to dwell with a woman!
When you read further down the line it says ‘as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.’ When it says we are heirs together of the grace of life it also means we have equal access to the grace of life. More importantly, it says ‘that your prayers be not hindered.’ This looks pretty simple but when it comes to the practical daily living, it’s hard for a lot of people. When you don’t dwell with your wife with knowledge and don’t treat her as the weaker vessels, then your prayers will be hindered.
We can also deduce that if you want your prayers to be answered you have to ensure you are dwelling with your wife according to wisdom. This may mean that you have to let her talk sometimes without you talking back. A woman can be very sharp with her mouth but if you react to everything she says you might commit murder! When you are tired and she wants to talk you have to find a way to shift grounds a little. You may want things done in the house in a certain manner and she may want it done the other way. It requires wisdom to handle it. Sometimes it means you must know what they want and give it to them. They want to run the house and you should give them room to feel like they truly own the home. When you are taking decisions, consult them. Don’t say their opinions don’t count. When you do that, you give them a reassuring confidence of their place in the house.
One of the other reasons you have to dwell with women according to wisdom is to realize that they can be more emotional. When they speak up sometimes they are speaking based on emotions and not logic. When you hear them talk at such times, don’t be confused and don’t react in the heat of the moment.
It may also not be a bad ideas to read up more from women about women. If you spend so much time preparing for some tests or school exams, how much more someone you will live with for the rest of your life?
Dwell with them according to knowledge, treat them right and you will have peace!
